McKenzie Approach for Spinal Pain
The McKenzie Method of MDT is a reliable assessment process intended for all musculoskeletal problems which is an excellent approach in treating spinal pain.
What is the McKenzie Method?
It is a well-researched, exercise based approach of assessment, diagnosis and treatment, using a comprehensive and clinically reasoned evaluation of patients without the use of expensive diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-rays and MRIs). The treatment principles of the McKenzie Method promote the body’s potential to repair itself and do not involve the use of medication, heat, cold, ultrasound, needles, or surgery. McKenzie Method allows patients to learn the principles and empowers them to be in control of their own symptom management, which can reduce dependency on medical intervention. Our physiotherapist Sean has been exposed to and trained in using the McKenzie Method.
What does it help with?
- Neck Pain
- Back Pain
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Neural Symptoms
- Pins & Needles
How soon can you expect to see results?
You’ll be please to know that a large portion/most of patients will see an improvement by the end of their first treatment session, and a significant improvement in their symptoms in 4-6 sessions. The goal of the McKenzie Approach is simple: ensure correct alignment of spinal joints, restore movement, and resolve pain.
What is a McKenzie-style treatment like?
During the physical examination, the therapist will ask you to move your spine in a variety of ways in order to correctly ascertain the movement that is causing the most pain/the movement that is most abnormal. Once this has been found, the therapist will then ask you to move your spine in a far more specific direction in order to help with your symptoms. The therapist will then perform hands-on mobilisations to the spinal joint at fault, in order to further improve your symptoms.
