Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Led by physiotherapists, post-op rehabilitation is the post-surgical program of re-establishing joint motion and function, muscle strength and resolving pain.

What Surgeries are suitable for post-operative rehabilitation?

Joint procedures such as: hip/knee replacements, discectomies or disc replacements, spinal fusions, laminectomies, dynamic hip screws (DHS), meniscal/cartilage repair, frozen shoulder, debridement.
Soft tissue procedures such as: ACL repair, Achilles tendon repair, patellar tendon repair, lateral ankle ligament repair, rotator cuff repair.

What about injections?

Sometimes the surgeon may not choose to operate. The surgeon may elect to inject the structure that is involved. Injections are generally ultrasound-guided and are corticosteroid based. It is just as important to have rehabilitation after having an injection, as these are normally pain relievers only and are temporary – they will not correct the abnormal structures in the area.

How soon can you expect to see results?

You’ll be please to know that a large portion/most of patients will see an improvement by the end of their first treatment session, and a significant improvement in their symptoms in 4-6 sessions.

Who is involved in my Recovery?

The two main professionals involved in your recovery is the orthopaedic surgeon and the physiotherapist. They will work hand-in-hand to guide your recovery process. Orthopaedic surgeons will recommend the patient has physiotherapy and rehabilitation as soon as they are out of theatre. Both professionals will discuss appropriate and realistic timescales in order to reach your goals. Sean has experience in the UK working with some the best surgeons there and will help you work towards what you want to achieve.
